SS14 Trend Guide: Part 1

Now that we’re in March, and the worst of the winter weather is (hopefully!) behind us, it’s time to turn our attention to spring/summer styles that will be key for the season ahead.

We’ve asked some expert fashion and beauty bloggers, and some M&Co Head Office insiders, to give us their take on a few of the trends we’ll be wearing this season and how you can make the look your own…

Sugar Coated

Designer Inspiration: DKNY, Burberry Prorsum, Versace

The candy pastel palette was a strong look in catwalk collections where designers created a sweet sorbet of shades: lemon, sugar pink, mint and parma violet were key colours.

Michelle Pan, of Satchels and Pearls headed over to LFW and gave us her take on the trend:

I think spring/summer ’14 is a time to be daring, be bold and clash bright prints for a stand out edgy look.

White bag | Floral shift dress | Necklace

I’ve always been a fan of vintage prints, combining texture, pattern and pastel colours together.

I would therefore style the summery pastel print dress with this white cross body bag’.

Laura from Lolly Loves Makeup also picked out the Oriental Floral Shift Dress and gave us her top beauty tips to complement the look:

‘A  neutral eye  with a bold lip works best with pastels. A bright pink would look amazing and will give a great pop of colour.

For spring/summer I will be bringing out the pink lip, for me it helps brighten up my complexion and makes me look more awake.

The floral dress with a pair of nude heels would look amazing, also a nude clutch! They would 100% be the perfect accessories for this lovely bold print dress. It’s right up my street!’

The classic combination of black and white gets a makeover for spring/summer with a graphic asymmetric look seen on many catwalk shows.

Fashionista Wendy Gilmour of Thank Fifi is pleased to see the return of her favourite look:

‘I am really excited about the comeback of black and white – it’s a classic trend which never really goes away and it’s so easy for everyone to adapt it for their own style.  Ladylike shapes are finally reappearing again too so I’m looking forward to digging out some waist belts.

Because it’s a colour led trend there are really no restrictions; black and white works for the day job right through to evening looks.

I’ll be pulling well-tailored pieces, some layers likely, and adding a nice wide waist belt to give a chic silhouette.’

Rosie Smith, a makeup and beauty enthusiast and the beautiful face behind Rosie Alexandra, also loves the natural look with a glowing, dewy finish to complement this trend.

Spot prom dress | Bow pocket cardigan | Leather bag

I love to pair this with a subtle eye look, involving a thin eye liner which builds up towards the end, making the lashes and eyes appear bigger.

To pair with the natural look, I would use a pink-nude lipstick to add some hint of colour to the face. Something that would go well with this is the lovely spot prom dress! I love a polka dot in the spring and summer, it would be beautiful with a natural look, but a slight build-up of black eyeliner.’

joanne2M&Co’s Web Content Manager Joanne Wilkinson is a big fan of the blue trend:

‘There really is a sea of blues to choose from this year with nautical navy stripes and china blue florals looking particularly strong for the season ahead.

Our nautical striped prom dress is a perfect vintage-inspired piece that fits with spring/summer’s retro seaside vibe while the China print shift dress is perfect for summer weddings.’

Lesley McCormack, M&Co’s Senior Online Womenswear Coordinator, is a fan of the effortlessly-groomed look:

A lighter makeup look works well for summer, especially against cooler blue tones.

The models at the Stella McCartney show, which featured lots of blue, had luminous skin and slicked back hair.

An up-do looks elegant and works well if you have a hint of metallic eyeshadow on your lids – just enough to catch the sun’s rays.’
