Autumn/Winter is officially upon us and although we are sad to say goodbye to summer, it does mean one thing… Hello winter trends! We have previously discussed the 3 trends that you need to know, but knitwear is a staple in every winter wardrobe. What’s different this season? Knitwear has gone head-to-toe! With help from Helen Canning, stylist and writer at Coco Mama Style, we are going to talk you through how to tackle this season’s knitwear hits.
As seen on the catwalks, knit coat over knit dress over knit leggings is completely acceptable. We might not be able to pull off this entire look but we will give it a good shot. Think polo neck under knit dress, over a think pair of woolly tights. Finish the look off with a belt to clinch in your waist and some winter woollies.
“A fine knit roll neck is the perfect base for layering and is a key neckline this season. Choose a neutral tone and you can layer it with other, chunkier knits for cosy winter style.
A classic black roll neck adds an air of elegance to any outfit and can take you from day to evening when teamed with a midi skirt or, turn heads in this scarlet roll neck while ticking off another big trend for AW14; vibrant reds. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and avoid over-acccessorising; let the clean lines be the focus.
The cape-meets-blanket is your new-season best friend when it comes to outerwear. It’s the perfect transitional layering piece before the winter chill really takes hold and this knitted leopard print wrap looks effortless belted over an all black outfit. ”
Knitwear has not only gone head-to-toe, it has gone supersized. If you are not keen on layering your knitwear then this one is for you. Cosy up in a super snug boyfriend knit to look bang on trend with minimal effort.
They were a reoccurring item during autumn/winter fashion weeks, from Stella McCartney and Acne to Sonia Rykiel, they were an item to be reckoned with. Step forward the humble knit dress…
“From coats to gilets, faux fur is big news this season, but if you’re yet to try this trend why not ease yourself in with a bit of trim. This chunky knit cardigan nods to the furry trend with its detachable collar and you’ll have endless options when it comes to accessorising other outfits with this fur collar too. Try teaming it with a plain fine knit cardi too.”
We all love an added extra, right? Think jewel embellishments! This season it is easy to glam up your wardrobe staples.
“A sprinkling of jewels, a cluster of gems or an embellished neckline on the softest sweater brings sparkle to your daywear with minimal effort and no accessories required. Wear this elegantly embellished sweater over a buttoned-up white shirt to add instant glitz to a jeans look and it’ll take you right through to the festive party season with trousers or on-trend culottes and heels.”
“The colder months needn’t mean a wardrobe full of darker shades because adding a splash of colour is a sure-fire way to brighten a grey day. Lighter and brighter tones are working their way into our autumnal wardrobes more each year (remember the pink coat trend last year?) and this season isn’t just about berry tones and neutrals either.
Work two trends in one with this zesty embellished sweater (an absolute must, must-have from M&Co this season) and style it with a full skirt and pointed courts or wear simply with a pair of jeans and flats.”
A final note from our special guest…
“As the weather changes and we look to wrapping up warm, this is the easiest time to work some texture into your outfit and add interest to your look. Team knits and leather or denim with lightweight contrasting fabrics to keep your look current. Layer a chunky knit like this basket stitch jumper over a longer length floaty top and wear with jeans or introduce a leather-look pencil skirt into the mix for a luxe day look.”
So ladies, prepare to be super toasty this season.
