Our latest Style Guide focuses on Yorkshire, taking a look at what’s hot up north with stylish blogger Anna Mewes from Glam Up North.

How long have you been living in Yorkshire?
I’m actually a Southerner (although my family hail from the North of England) and moved to Yorkshire around 10/11 years ago.
I can’t ever imagine going back. I love the countryside and open spaces that we have here but we’re also so central it’s really easy to get to major cities like Leeds and Manchester (and London is less than 3 hours by train).
So I really get the best of both worlds – beautiful scenery and fresh air where I live and then my fix of city life, fashion and culture just down the road in Leeds.
What is the best thing about living in Yorkshire?
I think the best thing about living in the North of England is the people. They’re open, kind and honest – they also have a wicked sense of humour and generally don’t take themselves too seriously!
What is the best place for fashion inspiration?
I look for fashion inspiration everywhere, but have to admit I’m pretty addicted to Pinterest and Instagram as my main sources of inspiration.
I follow lots of bloggers from the North as well as some in London and in the States. I just love seeing how differently people style certain pieces and get loads of ideas that I then translate into my own wardrobe and style to make them unique to me.
In recent years I think fashion has really relaxed – there are no ‘rules’ now, it’s very much about dressing for yourself in a way that makes you look and feel your best, which I think is great.
How would you best describe Yorkshire fashion?
Day-to-day I think fashion in Yorkshire is very understated and stylish, but also practical.
It can get pretty cold and a lot of time is spent outside so warmth is important. Well-groomed and warm is probably a good sum-up.
In the evening though we know how to go glam!
What are your favourite products from M&Co’s current range?
I’m definitely in spring shopping mode now so anything with light, bright colours and some print is drawing my eye.
From the current M&Co range my favourites are…
Cropped boyfriend jeans (£26) – I’d roll these up and pair them with heels, a tee and a statement necklace for a laid-back lunch/cocktail date with the girls
Girlfriend cardigan (£29) – I think I’d have to get one of these in every colour! They’re great for throwing on over jeans to add a pop of colour or wear with shorts on cool summer evenings.
Culottes (£26) – culottes are set to be a huge trend Spring/Summer so I’ll definitely be snapping a pair up. They need a high shoe to elongate the leg and a fitted top to keep the look neat. They’d be great for a meal out at The Box Tree (one of my favourite restaurants in Ilkley for special occasions).
What is there to do in Yorkshire?
I live in Baildon which is a gorgeous little village not far from Bradford and much of our spare time is spent walking on Baildon Moor. There’s a lovely little deli called Pickles just down the road from us that do amazing homemade food and sell local produce so a weekly visit there is a must!
I love visiting some of the independent shops they have just down the road from us in Ilkley. Nora’s Interiors & Gifts is one of my favourites, they have a great selection of bits for the home and fabulous gifts – the shop just looks like something out of a movie, it’s so pretty and I never leave without buying something! I would highly recommend spending an afternoon in Ilkley if you’re in the area, for a small town there’s lots to do and it’s so pleasant to meander around the streets visiting the lovely stores they have there.
Central Leeds has so much going on and I love to visit whenever I get the chance. The First Direct Arena showcases a whole range of artists, the West Yorkshire Playhouse and The Grand theatres always have some amazing plays on (I saw Swan Lake there a couple of years ago – it was truly magical). A for pubs and restaurants – there’s everything from Taverns to cocktail bars (The Alchemist is a must visit for the best cocktails in town!).
Where should we visit in Yorkshire?
For beauty treatments, amazing massages and friendly service I go to H Beauty in Baildon – it’s tucked away so you have to know it’s there but it’s well worth seeking out if you’re in the mood to be pampered!
For a girly lunch visit Harvey Nichols Cafe in the Victoria Quarter, Leeds – great food and service!
For dinner and a movie The Everyman in The Trinty Centre, Leeds is great – amazing pizza, comfy sofas made for two and you can even take your G&T in whilst you watch the film, what’s not to love?!
Which is your favourite hangout spot?
I don’t need an excuse to visit Toast House – it is by far my favourite hangout spot anywhere (not just in Ilkley!).
The owners are so friendly and have done such an amazing job, the attention to detail inside is incredible, they have thought of everything – it’s unique, quirky and welcoming, I enjoy coffee there with my husband and friends but am equally comfortable taking my toddler in (they have books, colouring things and make him a special little babyccino which he loves).
They’re so welcoming it’s like a home away from home. All the cakes are homemade (and to-die-for) and they do a selection of toast and toppings which are all freshly made and seasonal – it’s just divine. And the coffee? Best ever! They also gave a great selection of teas too.
Finally, tell us something that people might not know about Yorkshire?
The Leeds coat of arms features three owls and the city has a strong connection with owls.
There are owls dotted all around Leeds City Centre and you can even do an Owl Trail that takes you all around the city discovering owls that have been built within the architecture!
I actually did it once and it’s a brilliant way to see the city – and there really are little owls everywhere!!
