Staff from M&Co and Cancer Research UK swap jobs for the day to celebrate £2 million raised for the charity
To celebrate M&Co raising £2 million for Cancer Research UK, our Largs store manager Fiona Moon swapped the sales floor for the laboratory to spend the day shadowing a scientist at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow.
Fiona has worked for M&Co for 25 years and was certainly put through her paces by research scientist Emma Woodham. Twenty four hours later the tables were turned, as Emma stepped on to the sales floor to experience the fast-paced world of fashion retail!
“It was a huge shock for Emma and I as we were both totally out of our comfort zones,” said Fiona. “I love my job at M&Co but it’s a busy environment and there’s far too much for one person to learn in just one day. Emma did really well, but it was a challenge and a change of direction for her.”
As for the swap itself, Fiona was taken aback at what she learned from her time in the lab.
“I was in awe of all the state of the art equipment at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute. I think it’s the most amazing place and the lifesaving research they do there is simply remarkable.”
Cancer Research UK is a charity very close to Fiona’s heart as her mum is currently battling the disease.
“My own mum is going through cancer at the moment. Mum is the most wonderful and kind person. I know cancer touches so many families. It was an absolute privilege to see at first hand all the scientists are doing to fight back against this devastating disease. I’m so proud that M&Co has now raised more than £2 million pounds for Cancer Research UK.”
Emma, Cancer Research UK’s scientist, also thoroughly enjoyed every second of her day with M&Co and taking part in the job swap.
“It was great to meet everyone at M&Co whose incredible fundraising allows scientists to develop new ways to beat cancer sooner. As for my abilities on the shop floor, I’m sure Fiona would agree that I best stick to my day job!”
£2 million milestone
We’re really proud to have now raised more than £2 million towards beating cancer sooner with a fabulous range of imaginative fundraising initiatives from our staff and customers. From fashion shows to bake offs, zip slides to a national baton relay cycle challenge to mark the Commonwealth Games, we’ve stopped at nothing to achieve our target.
Funds have also been raised through donation stations in M&Co stores for customers to donate unwanted clothes to help stock Cancer Research UK’s shops.
Cancer Research UK spokeswoman Fiona Lewars said, “We are so grateful to M&Co and are humbled by the staggering sum they have raised for Cancer Research UK.”
“Cancer affects us all and one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. Thanks to the incredible progress that’s been made in the last 40 years, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Today, half those diagnosed with cancer survive the disease for at least 10 years.”
“Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress so that three quarters will survive cancer within the next 20 years. Whether you’re a supporter or a scientist, we are all working towards the day when all cancers are cured.”
